It’s been a long time coming, but 2016 Cleveland (Seattle, Wa.) ATH Zechariah Brown finally hauled in his first offer recently.

“I got offered by the University of San Diego,” Brown told Northwest Elite Index recently. “Coach (Jeff) Schmidt knew some of the coaches there and he contacted them about me. He sent them my film and that is sorta how things got started.

“They evaluated me and then they called (late last week) and offered me.”

San Diego doesn’t offer athletic scholarships per se, but they do promise a roster spot and then provide scholarships if the prospect is academically qualified.

“They said they really liked me as a player, but they had to make sure all of my academic stuff was ready to go,” Brown said. “My GPA is where it needs to be and I have a high enough test score, so that’s why they decided to tell me that I had a place there.

“It’s exciting to finally get that first offer. They are a good program and they have a good history there.”

USD isn’t the only program that Brown has been talking to.

“I’m actually heading over to Central Washington on January 8th and 9th, a Friday and Saturday, to meet with the coaches there and see their program,” Brown said. “I’ve also been talking to a few D-3 programs too, but right now, no offers have been coming out of those.”

As a senior this season, Brown helped lead Cleveland into the Round of 32 in the state playoffs, by posting 43 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, five interceptions, three of which he took back for touchdowns, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery from his defensive back spot while also totaling over 1,600 yards and 11 touchdowns on offense.

“We had a good season,” Brown noted. “I mean, obviously you want to win a championship, but our program was down for so long, that for us to finally get into the Round of 32, that was big for us.

“We made the playoffs recently, but we hadn’t made the Round of 32 for over 30 years, so it was big for us as a senior class to help get us back there.

“Coach Schmidt is building a good program here and I think we all can see how much the program has improved in the time he’s been there.”

NEI will continue to keep tabs on Brown as he continues to wind his way through the recruiting process and gets closer to making his decision and we will update news on him as it happens.
