NW Top Junior Linebacker; Joey Alfieri-Jesuit

(Joey Alfieri 6-2 220 Jr. LB/RB Jesuit, One of the region’s top linebackers)

As the 2012 season gets closer we start to look at kids that are dominant at their position within their class. Joey Alfieri (6-2 218 Jr. LB/RB) of Jesuit fits the bill on both ends. He is the son of a former NFL Pro in Phil Alfieri, and earned 1st team all league honors as a sophomore in the state’s toughest conference.

We got to see Joey compete on the camp circuit this spring, and he more then looked the part. His closing speed and overall football ability are the first things that become very apparent when you see him play. For any kid to rack up 1st team all conference honors as a sophomore in the Metro is rare, and speaks to his talents.

Alfieri could potentially be ranked the top junior linebacker in Oregon when we release our updated rankings with Nick Underwood (6-1 215 Jr. LB/RB Lake Oswego), Perry Groves (6-3 210 Jr. LB McNary), Sam Bodine (6-2 205 Jr. LB/RB Canby), and a host of others giving the 2014 class a very talented group.

Jesuit is the only team ranked in the Top 100 nationally from Oregon coming into the season, and they once again look like a powerhouse state wide with a laundry list of D1 kids. Joey says, " As a team our primary goal is to win a state championship for our school, and in order to do that we must take the season one game at a time and right now we are just focused on McMinnville".

Alfieri added, " personally my goal is to help my team perform and win football games no matter if im playing linebacker, fullback, tailback, or slot….Im extremely excited about our defense because we have several core guys returning with myself, Christian Martinek (6-3 215 Jr. QB/DE), and Trent Werner (6-1 190 Jr. OLB/SS/ATH) all being returning junior starters from last year".

These three imparticular are some of the top athletes junior athletes in the entire region. Martinek is a freak and maybe the top overall athlete in the state of Oregon for his class. He is one of the best high school pitchers in America, and also earned 1st team all league honors at D End as a sophomore. You know you are a crazy good athlete when you play QB and DE, and are potentially the best at both. We are also big fans of Werner who is a two way threat and someone that projects at the D1 level with continued progression. We will hear a great deal about all three of these kids over the next two years, along with TE/DE Henry Mondeaux (6-4 240 Jr. ) who will be ranked the top TE in Oregon by NEI for the 2014 class.

Joey’s brother Nick is currently playing ball at Georgetown after a successful career at Jesuit himself. His father Phil originally played for the Oregon St Beavers before going to play with the NY Jets, and his mother was a sprinter at OSU so to say that they have some athleticism in their family would be a slight understatement. Its neat to see a family stay close, do things the right way and love the sport of the football.

Just to emphasize the magnitude of last season you can look at Alfieri’s stats where he accumulated 105 tackles in 13 games, with a superman like performance against Tigard where he had 25 total tackles (15 solo, 10 assisted).

"As long as I keep working hard and going 100% in everything I do, I feel like I can help my team have a phenomenal year and hopefully get my name out their in the recruiting world". Alfieri is a great kid first and an outstanding LB second. He has our full support moving forward and projects at the D1 level. In seeing Joey over the last year I feel that he has some intangibles that other people don’t. His acceleration to the ball, and ability to read are unique and better then anyone else his age. I am one of Alfieri’s biggest fans and feel like he will be a legit Pac 12 type backer.
