Macartney McQuery

This past weekend at the Barton Elite camp, one of the top performers was Ballarmine Prep (Tacoma) OL Macartney McQuery. At 6’2″, 310 pounds, McQueary already has the requisite size to play along a college offensive line right now and he’s also out to show he’s got the intesity and nasty side necessary to be a mauler at the next level.
“I love being physical and putting guys on their backs,” McQueary told Northwest Elite Index in between workouts this past weekend. “I like guard the most because I’ve always been an offensive guy because I love blowing up the guy across from me. I’d rather do that than get into the backfield and make a tackle”.
“It’s more rewarding to me to be that guy in the trenches that helps pave the way for the running back down the field.”
On the recruiting front, McQueary is headed to Pullman this weekend to take in Washington State’s Junior Day and he’s also hearing from several other schools.
“I’m getting a lot of letters from Washington State, Oregon State and Princeton right now,” McQueary said. “It’s still early for me, but those are the main three I’m hearing from.”
McQueary has been hard at work this offseason, attending several Barton workouts including the Elite event this past weekend and he said it has really helped his fundamentals.
“It’s helping me get fundamentally sound in pass-protection and I’m working on all of the things you need to work on to become a dominant offensive lineman,” McQueary said. “I want to get my speed down and get more flexible. I want to be able to reach the ‘backer and blow them up.
“I’m looking at doing these camps every weekend or hit as many of them as I can and I’m also lifting and running during the week.”
With McQueary’s size and work ethic, the sky is the limit on his potential and he plays with a bit of a nasty streak, which is something that intrigues a lot of the college coaches who have flocked to Bellarmine Prep this winter.
We will have more from McQueary in the coming weeks and months as he continues on through the recruiting process.
