In only their fifth year as a program, the Kingston Buccaneers can boast their first major college prospect, QB Sam Byers who at 6’5″, 240 pounds dominated teams with both his size and athleticism..
Now having completed his senior season of football Byers is being heavily recruited by several schools including Portland State and Eastern Washington who he will visit on January 20th. He was offered a walk on spot from Oregon State, but the talented prospect isn’t about individual glory and told Northwest Elite Index recently that he thrives under pressure.
“Coming in, I wanted to be a leader for my team and I wanted our offense to run through me,” Byers said. “I love the pressure that comes with that and how my team depended on me and I depend on them as well.”
The first thing you notice about Byers is his impressive size. Most prep quarterbacks aren’t 6’5″ 240 pounds, but what really sets him apart from the rest is his athleticism and instincts.
“He could do almost anything on the football field,” Kingston head coach Danny Novick told NEI recently. “Some schools like him at tight end, some like him on defense. We would have played him both ways this year, but we needed him to be our quarterback and he was too valuable for us on that side of the ball so we didn’t play him there”.

“He was a three-year varsity starer for us and this year he was the Kitsap Sun Player of the Year, so the kid is a legit prospect for sure.”
Byers mentioned that some schools are also looking at him along the offensive line and he admits that’s something that he hadn’t necessarily thought of before, but he’s open to anything they’d like him to do.
“I just love playing ball and I’d like to keep doing it,” Byers said. “I’m open to playing wherever I can and if it’s on the offensive line then that’s fine, but most of the schools recruiting me like me at tight end or defensive end.”
This season Byers led the Bucs to the state playoffs where they lost in the first round, but he isn’t looking back at this point…only toward the future.
“It was disappointing because I think we overlooked our opponent and we didn’t play well,” Byers said. “We had a great season though and I feel the entire program has a great future with some of the younger guys we have coming up.”
