A kid we will all hear a lot about over the next couple seasons will be Matt Sommer (6-5 290 DL/OL Jr.) out of West Salem. The Junior to be is an absolute monster, and has made the biggest jump of any player thus far on the NEI Rankings for the 2013 class.
He is an unquestioned Division 1 talent that is as athletic and explosive as they come. He happens to be a stand out basketball player as well all the more showing off his athletic ability. Scouts like to see a kid that has size, but is also athletic and Sommer has both traits.
In 2010 he was a second team all league selection on the D line as a sophomore. He will be teaming with Lochlin Deeks 6-4 255 C/LB Sr. (Portland St, Air Force Offers) and Carl Kreitzburg 6-3 265 OL/DL Sr. (Yale Commit) to form one of the top line trio’s in the state. He will be making a significant jump on the 2013 overall player rankings and is considered one of the 2 top junior D lineman in the state, the other Bryson Sullivan (6-4 250 DE/TE Jr- Aloha).
The Titans took a beating by nationally ranked Sheldon 51-0 the first game of the year and Sommer took it in stride, ” they are a very good team, but we will come back from this and be fine”. The Titans blasted South Eugene last week 57-12 and finished off #6 West Linn 24-3 last night moving to (2-1) on the year. Sommer scored the first touchdown of his career against South picking up a fumble and returning it for a touchdown.
Sommer looks like a “bouncer” and what’s scary is he is still very young. You can’t teach size as he hovers around 6-6 / 300. This is what will have schools knocking on his door. Oregon, Oregon St, Washington, and Stanford are all programs he has heard from more than once, but its still very early. He will be listed in the Top 10 when the new overall rankings are released next week, and we expect only big things from one of the Pacific Northwest’s top lineman.
